Severne S-1 Comp wave::
The S1 is Severne's all round wave sail, designed to have a smoother power delivery and more traditional wave sailing feel than the Blade. Developed by the Australian young guns - Ty Bodycoat and Luke Walmsley, it has been tested on the tour for two years now. More traditional in look than the Blade it has better visibility and the same levels of build quality. Kevlar reinforcements at the tack and head, together with plenty of scrim and covered seams where abrasion erodes stitching, makes for a very well engineered sail.
On the water the S1 had a blend of impeccable handling characteristics, together with a tight, crisp nature that made it not only practical, but extremely potent for the experienced rider.
Although not as forceful as the Blade, power delivery is extremely smooth, making it effortless in a straight-line; it soaks up all the shock from bumpy water found at more confused breaks. At the same time it is highly efficient; every flex of the rig directs the board well, keeping it trimmed and stable. This composure and drive calms the most nervous of hulls, but still leaves a great deal of solid response, allowing you to take advantage of all the manoeuvrability that the board can offer. The handling inspires confidence to power into carves, where the sail gives an alert yet light feel, enabling the most radical of boards to excel in less than perfect conditions. In transition it is extremely well balanced, with a very light overall physical weight. You need a strong arm to downhaul the S1 as it does take a fair bit of tension, although there is a good amount of static tuning range available. Setting on a 400cm mast, it also provides the practicality of only needing one mast throughout the core of a quiver. All in all, it is a very impressive sail and won much acclaim from all who used it.
Verdict:
very popular sail that offers characteristics well suited to all styles and weights, from intermediate to expert. Light, and responsive when used for wave riding, it also provides a soft and comfortable power delivery for 'freeride' coastal sailing. Highly recommended.
